2023 was full of major developments in Google advertising: the phasing out of cookies, the rise of Performance Max, and the emergence of YouTube Shorts.
So what will we be talking about in Google advertising in 2024?
New Developments in Performance Max: Performance Max, often referred to as PMax, is Google's marketing tool that runs unified, goal based campaigns across all of its inventory platforms. Here's what we saw in 2023:
The integration of real time data analytics
Greater precision in reaching engaging target audiences
Improved engagement through better AI driven prediction of customer behavior
Optimization across audience signals, creative assets, and product data
More advanced insights
With ongoing and upcoming product improvements, PMax is becoming an increasingly compelling tool in terms of both performance and adaptability.
New "Demand Generation" Campaigns Across Integrated Google Ad Platforms: By bringing together platforms like YouTube Shorts, YouTube in-stream, YouTube Feed, Google Discover, and Gmail, Google is delivering the right message to the right audience at the right time. We'll see even deeper integration across these platforms in 2024.
Expanded AI Powered Image Generation Capabilities in Product Studio: Google introduced Product Studio this year to help advertisers create higher quality, more compelling images. It already works across multiple platforms and frees advertisers from the time consuming, costly process of traditional content creation. As AI capabilities continue to advance, we expect Product Studio's features to grow even further.
New Multi Format Video Campaigns, Video View Campaigns: Video View campaigns were introduced to help optimize cost per impression. In beta testing, Video View campaigns delivered 40% better visibility compared to single format video campaigns.
YouTube Shorts: YouTube Shorts already works in integration with Performance Max, app campaigns, and Demand Generation campaigns across Google's broad inventory. We expect the two beta tests launched in October 2023 for YouTube Shorts to continue evolving through 2024.
Increasing Integration Across Platforms and Channels: Search engines, social media, e-commerce platforms, and other digital touchpoints will increasingly serve as spaces where advertisers build fully integrated advertising experiences. Just as Microsoft Advertising now lets you run ads on Snapchat and import campaigns directly from Facebook, we expect similar integration opportunities to emerge across other social networks as well.
Blurring Lines Between Advertiser Roles: As AI on these platforms continues to advance, the lines between campaign strategist, media buyer, and end stage creative producer will continue to blur.
